If you begin to research how to optimize your self storage facility’s website, you will probably encounter the same acronym over and over: SEO.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is an entire industry in and of itself. The larger self storage operators have an SEO expert either as an employee or as a regular consultant. Many companies even outsource the duties to companies who are experts at optimizing or even full service web companies that will build a website from scratch utilizing their expertise in SEO to get the most search traffic for the sites that they build.
Of course, as a smaller operator, you may have neither the expertise to do your own SEO nor the cash to farm out the job to those that do know. Luckily there are few easy ways to optimize your website without spending a lot of time or cash.
Make sure that you know what the keywords are that you are expecting people to search for, and include them on your site. You can easily identify what keywords your potential customers use to search by employing the Google Keyword Tool. You can search for things like “Atlanta Self Storage” and compare it to similar searches like “storage units in Atlanta” to find out which terms are most popular. Then you can include those specific terms in the text on your site so that people searching for them will be sent to you.
2. Photos & Videos
It’s also important to utilize photos & videos to their full potential. This is not only because you want your site to show off your property (or properties) but also because having correctly tagged images will help improve your google search ranking. The same holds true for videos. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to take photos of your self storage facility at its best and add them to your site, with relevant titles and captions to help with search results as well as conversions.
Search engines work by sending ‘robots’ to your site that try to figure out what your site is and who will be interested in it. Having your keywords incorporated is an important part of this, but so is making your site easy to navigate. It makes it easier for the ‘bots’ to categorize, index and list your site in its search results.
Having a blog (like this one!) is looked on favorably by search engines. You don’t need to worry too much about your blog traffic on its own, but blogging on a regular basis about your business and its progress is a great way to not only personalize your company, but also to increase search traffic.
5. Business Reviews
Be sure to keep up to date on your facility’s reviews and comments on sites like Yelp.com and GetSatisfaction.com. Prompt responses can be integral in turning an unhappy customer into a satisfied one, and these sites rank very highly for local search so having a complete profile will aid your search engine rankings.
Those are only 5 very basic tips to optimize your site for search engines. We will cover more tips in the coming weeks, including maintaining robust profiles on social networks, utilizing Search Engine Marketing and listing your facilities on third party sites like Storitz.com.
