How to Use Self-Storage: What Size Storage Unit Do I Need?

This is Part 2 of our 5-Part series: How to Use Self Storage.

You’ve chosen your facility and Storitz made it pretty easy, didn’t we?  Yeah, that’s what we’re all about.

But once you’ve decided which facility you want to rent from, you’ll also need to know what kind of unit you need.  That can be a little bit stressful for someone that’s never rented storage before and isn’t really sure where to start so we’re going to try to help you out in this week’s installment of How to Use Self Storage.

First, I’ve got some great advice as to where to start: the Storitz size guide.  Check out our home page and look for those little words that say “size guide” then click away.

You’ll see the same image that I’ve posted below: what fits in what size with helpful descriptions and graphics.

A 5×5 storage unit is ideal for a dorm room, Christmas decorations, lamps, a bookshelf.  5’ by 5’ is about the size of a small closet, keeping in mind that most storage units are between 8′ and 9′ tall.  So if you’ve got a sofa, you could probably stand it on end in a 5×5, depending on its construction.

A 5×10 storage unit is the size of a large walk-in closet.  It will fit your sofa and a mattress along, a dresser — basically whatever you had in your first apartment.  This can be a great choice if you’re downsizing temporarily or perhaps remodeling one room and need to move out the furniture.

A 7×10 storage unit is a size that not all facilities have but it obviously falls between a 5×10 and a 10×10.  It will fit a small bedroom and a living room plus some miscellaneous tools and equipment.  A mattress set, a dresser, some lamps, some boxes.  A 7×10 can be a good choice if you live in an apartment and need to leave for a while, maybe to travel abroad or are a military servicemember being deployed.

A 10×10 will easy fit the contents of a 1 bedroom apartment and can fit some large furnishings, a refrigerator, and some boxes.  Maybe you are moving out a bigger house into a smaller one and need temporary storage for your extra furnishings until you get settled.

A 10×15 storage unit will hold a the contents of a small house or can serve as boat storage or storage for a camper trailer.

The large 10×20 unit will hold the contents of a whole 3 bedroom house, making it a perfect solution if you’re moving overseas for a period of time or if you’ve closed down a business and need to store its equipment.  You can even easily use a 10×20 storage unit as a garage for a car or SUV.

Both 10×25 and 10×30 units are extra large.  Small business owners or contractors often choose these sizes for use a min-warehouse.  This is a great option to reduce business storage costs as well as have the flexibility to access inventory whenever necessary since many facilities offer 24 hour access.

Hopefully this was a helpful guide to storage unit sizes.  Is there anything we missed?  Let us know in the comments.
